Die chemische Aufspaltung von Estern in ihre Bestandteile: Säure und Alkohole. Alle Ester, d. h. auch alle trocknenden Alkydharz-Bindemittel und die daraus hergestellten Lacke, zeigen Neigung, unter Einwirkung von alkalischen Stoffen wieder zu zerfallen.
